Self isolation, social distancing, sheltering in place, whatever else you call it

birdy beat me to that one because it alllllllll depends on where you are for WA for polite people :rotfl: There's a reason that we have the phrase "Seattle Freeze" even though I haven't experienced it.

I honestly can't tell if Ma was being serious or sarcastic. If it's the former, then I want to see some specific examples of how people out east have poorer manners than westerners  (Obviously it's all just silliness, like Slix said, there are all kinds of different people everywhere... you can't really generalize about whole regions / groups of people like that... or maybe you can :rotfl:)

Well I guess we're officially in the second wave :sigh: Ontario has been reporting 300+ new cases everyday for a while now, some days 400+ IIRC. It's mostly the GTA and Ottawa driving that, locally the case numbers haven't gone up a ton... but I don't live very far away from the GTA so it's not like it's a a world away from me. Not too much cases have been confirmed at schools in our region though. Unless something new was reported over the weekend, I don't think any schools have been closed due to outbreaks. Sure hope my 9 year old doesn't get stuck having to do remote learning again. Being at home all the time drove us all nuts. We are also supposed to start the toddler in childcare on October 5th. This week I'll be finalizing our registration, signing up for childcare subsidies, etc. Hopefully it isn't all a waste of time!

I hope for you guys it isn't.
For now our Gov updated what's happening in some areas.
*Convention centers, event centers and the like are now allowed to hold gatherings if certain ones can't be held remotely, but that means that it can either beat 30 percent capacity of said center or 200 people max. So until said otherwise any big Cons from now that haven't been canceled til early spring won't be happening.
*Updated requirements were put up for commercial airports
* And have extended the tuition waiver proclamation through beginning of Nov.

I haven't heard too much about school related stuff yet but it's still early and we are about half remote and half in person depending on which school district and area. One of my managers is fairly confident that this will blow over after Nov because even though she does believe Covid exists...she feels that the numbers aren't as bad as it's claiming to be ( despite that we hit 200k in the US now :lazy:....) So...ya....it's hard keeping my opinions to myself on some topics especially around management. At least that particular manager will allow you to say your feelings and respect them even if she doesn't fully agree.

edit: Now that I'm looking at it, Our casesses might be heading to a 2nd wave ourselves.

All I keep hearing about here is that bars and restaurants are the biggest problem. Indoor dining and bars might get shutdown again, or at least have their hours and capacities curtailed. Strip clubs will get shutdown first, I'm sure. Not sure why they even bothered re-opening some of these places :rotfl:

While I want to agree I know for a lot of the smaller run businesses were the biggest hit taken from the beginning of shutdowns. No matter how much you can set up for pickup or delivery or buy gift cards to keep them hopefully afloat, even with whatever financial aid they could try to apply for, a lot of places like that end up having to close permanently. I've seen a lot of it here already in downtown Seattle. Keep the big chain companies closed down where  they can since they can afford to imho. And while our current Gov was slow to act on things, a lot of the stupid masses are acting like it's all his fault when they should be directing that at the orange muppet.

I feel for the small businesses that are getting hit hard, and I hope we can find a way to let small restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. stay open in some fashion. It's more the bars, strip clubs, and casinos that I'm surprised are allowed to continue operating. Just doesn't seem smart.

Saw a picture on reddit from this club in Garden Grove (a city not too far from me) full of people, no social distancing, no masks. We are so fucked.

Just as things are starting to show signs of a second wave, my state, in its glorious wisdom, has rescinded it's mandatory mask order.

Best part is all those corporate owned places are probably loving it because they can ride out the wave on credit while all their competition slowly fails and closes. :-/

Bars and social shit like that still being open just seems ridiculous though.

It's all so terribly exhausting and frustrating. I am SO fucking thankful that we're in a good position to self isolate and stay afloat. Hell, until a week or so ago our savings were even starting to really grow! But then vet bills happened and, once again, I was just thankful I was in a position to be able to get my pet help, even if it was a big oof. I'm so fucking bitter though. We could have really beaten this down by just acting for the sake of others but noooooooooooooooooooooo or if our government had actually done something other than go lol it's sniffles it'll be gone in a week anyway fuck the libs or whatever happened

mostly right now i'm bitter as fuck because the Lupin III CGI movie is finally being released in the state and I CAN'T FUCKING GO SEE IT

This morning in the elevator I bumped into a neighbour who works at the Tim Hortons next to our building. She said they're prepping for another shutdown and everybody has had their hours cut in half. If the local Tims is preparing for the worst, that doesn't bode well :rotfl:

I had this lady at my check out earlier today. She was pointing to a guy that was at the Starbucks kiosk with his mask on his chin and was going on about not wearing it properly and gesturing with her arms like "Will you DO something about it?" So obviously I can't leave my checkstand because we're busy so I ask my manager as self scan next to me to say something. Which she did. But then there was apparently another guy walking behind the lines with same thing and the customer is going off about that. And then back to ranting about the first guy because while my manager did go ask him, he went and sat down at one of the Starbucks tables (which we brought a couple back out on the floor and spaced out for social distance ) and proceeded to drink his coffee, so mask was back on his chin.

Like, lady. There's only so much I or my manager can do when we're busy and I'm stuck in a checkstand ringing up YOUR order. :facepalm:As much as I would like to walk about with a "bitch wear your fucking mask" stick all day because I feel the same way about lazy mask wearers. It can't be done . ><

At this point, I feel like it all comes down to individual behaviour. No amount of rules, threats of fines, etc. is going to solve the problem. People need to get more serious about wearing masks, physical distancing, and limiting non-essential activities. I'm just not sure if there's a way to educate/convince the anti-mask, COVID-is-a-hoax people to change their behaviour. The people who aren't taking this seriously are dragging us all down :-/

My wife, kids, and I all came down with cold- and flu-like symptoms over the weekend :ugh: So I booked us an appointment at the COVID assessment centre at the local hospital and we got tested this morning. Apparently it can take anywhere from 24 hours to 6 days to get results - and public health will only call us if it was positive - so I'm going to spend the rest of the week checking for our results online :| It is going to be a long and boring and frustrating week.

My daughter had a 99ish temp for a couple days. So my wife and her got tested (my wife only to show my daughter that it was no big deal) I think it too 2 or 3 days for the negative results. We have all had allergy/runny/stuffy noses for a couple of days. Just normal stuff though thankfully.

Yeah, our little one started it all on Friday night with a very runny nose, then it was my wife, then me, and then our older daughter started coughing yesterday. Coincidentally, last week was our toddler's first week at childcare. Colds go around a lot at childcare centres. It's also been cooler weather lately. Lots of people get colds this time of year. But it seemed a bit irresponsible to just assume that it's only a cold. On the off chance that it is COVID, I don't want to be responsible for spreading it around :uhoh:

That was our thought too, even though we are all working/schooling from home.

Definitely hasn't been cold here ? Expecting 100+ temps again for the next three days.

We can expect day-time highs of 15 C if we're lucky this time of year, more likely closer to 10. At night it's not dipping below 0 yet, but it'll get close. Not cold by any means, but after summer people aren't ready to have to dress for the cooler temps and then those cold viruses starting flying around.

God. 30 degree heat is about when I start shutting down and turn into a zombie. We're lucky in that we mostly only get about two-ish weeks of it per summer (acks more like 3ish now spread throughout the summer because climate change ;_;). We're pretty much in the 10-13 range the entire week (50-60ish F?)

Our weather has beegetting colder and wetter around here. We even had thunder and lightning around today with strong winds and a couple days ago.

Today 1 coworker had to call out because she was possibly positive so she has to be out for 10 days, we might have another one (cashier) but Idk fully on her yet since she 's mostly prone to bad migraines in general but my manager says that she might be out for the 10 days as well. And apparently now my stores pharmacy can now administer mouth swab tests for Covid that take about 4 days to process (which i wouldn't know how trustworthy that might be vs the up the nose test but at least it's an option for some)

lee's dumbfuck cousin tested positive the other day and has potentially exposed the whole family thanks to granddad having a medical scare and everyone but me gathering in a parking lot outside the hospital to wait on answers. (I was not there because I felt sick, and didn't want to expose the whole family. My issue turned out to be anemia though.) He's been going out to bars and having people over to hang out all year and I'm so fucking angry. Lee's been tested but we're waiting on the results. So far other family has been negative, so that's a relief, but this cousin lives on the same property as the very very at risk grandparents and still has been acting this way. I'm so tired of this.

How much time between that gathering and when Lee went to get tested? I think if you go too soon after a potential exposure, there's a chance of a false negative..?

Have a similar situation going on here now. My wife's sister-in-law has it. They live in South Dakota (so basically NO restrictions what-so-ever) and she has been going out drinking/partying with her friends every weekend like a jackass. Normally I would silently laugh from a distance for her getting what she deserves at that point, except my wife's parents are regularly over there watching their kids for them. Needless to say, we found out she had it, and within like 3 days my mother-in-law fell ill and she had been here just a couple days before that. Test came back positive today so now we've got our fingers crossed that none of us have it. I've already had to take about 5 days off work awaiting test results for false alarms over the past few months, so this is going to get pretty rough if it goes the wrong way.

Mostly just worried about my wife's mom though. Her parents are well into their 60's so it could easily go worst case scenario with them. So far she seems to be handling it well though so maybe we'll get lucky.

fuuuuuuuuck that's scary, I hope y'all turn out negative for it.

I'll just never be able to understand people behaving this way during all this. Like... I get the urge, the feeling of loss and feeling trapped, I can process that but the extra step of saying fuck it I'm tired of it so i'm going to ignore it is just not something I can relate to.

Sorry for you guys that are testing for it.  That all sucks. :(

So far nothing major in our extended family (one aunt got it but everyone is okay).  We've been like going out and doing some things but are being smart about it, I think.  Went to the zoo with Luna and there was no one there and it was nice lol (outside stuff yeahhhhhhh!!).

it's been over 6 months of this shit now though. Jovanna may be going back to work soon.  I'm worried my kid is losing out on social development honestly which sucks but she'll probably be going back to daycare pretty soon anyway.  Things are definitely getting better as far as the numbers going down so at least there's that.  I'm hoping we can all just find a reasonable balance...everyone that can work from home just keep doing it, go out and do stuff but wear a mask, and man I don't know what happens for Christmas.  I'm sure most of the family would be fine but I'm really worried about trying to get together with Grandma and Grandpa so depressingly there's a good chance it's going to be a fucking Zoom Christmas which is just incredibly depressing to me.  I'll probably go to my parents house I guess and have a small gathering there since we've all been fairly smart about avoiding doing dumb things lol.

I honestly can't decide what pisses me off more. No maskers I see at work or those who have a mask on but it's under their chin and I ask them to put it on all the way. It's legit not fucking hard to wear one and if you're going to pretend that you're not a total no mask asshole as least wear it right.  :nono:

i wanna print this out and glue it all over the walls of my brother's house but that'd involve a lot of travel and effort

they got covid from a big family beach trip with my SIL's extended family and are now in "well we already had it so we're good" mode. They just got back from a trip to Disney! Stopped in to visit my old at-risk parents on the way back of course!

my parents can't understand why this pisses me off.

mom texted me yesterday to ask if we were traveling out there this year. I said no. I immediately get a call from her where she flails around like "well I thouuuught you'd say no buuuuuuut" and I was just like BITCH THERE'S A FUCKING PANDEMIC but... nicer.

We talked a bit and after a while she starts complaining about how boring their life is right now. Yes. Because, again, BITCH. PANDEMIC. ETC. but she was talking about how they were isolating so I'm just like well you're not really since you just had your son's whole family visit but ok.... and then she cheerfully starts talking about how maybe she should leave a day early to GO VISIT HER FAMILY INCLUDING MY GRANDMOTHER WHO IS IN HER FUCKIN' 90S and starts listing off people (mainly one uncle and his kids) who are going into the world to work and how she's "extra cautious around them" and I'm just like THEY SHOULDN'T BE HANGING OUT WITH MIMI EITHER

but i mean whatever, clearly nothing connects or sticks in their mind just like my in-laws so *throws hands up*

That sounds kinda frustrating. My situation is a bit of the opposite; even though we're being very careful, really limiting non-essential stuff and pretty much not getting together with anybody, many of my relatives (mum especially) are like hyper-serious about this stuff and will sometimes imply that I am not doing enough to stay safe. I got lectured because I do not disinfect my door knobs and keys every single time I leave and re-enter our apartment :ugh: I wear a mask, wash my hands religously, keep my hands away from my face unless I'm sure they're clean, keep physical distance from people, don't really get together with anybody anyways, etc. I feel like that is satisfactory.

Link to post

yeah, it's really easy to tip one way or the other on the precaution spectrum. For a while my mom would be like "well are y'all completely disinfecting everything after you go get groceries" and then tell me about how they went to Home Depot and it was packed and they saw so many people they knew and stopped to chat! then turn around and try and lecture me on keeping safe. I have no idea what they're actually doing precaution wise.

It sounds like you're being level headed and diligent about it and really that's the ideal but everyone has lost their fucking minds

Surface spread was shot down a while ago. All that stuff is pointless.  Wear a mask and wash your hands.  You'll be alright.  People are definitely just going completely insane at both sides of the spectrum. :uhoh:

Also I lol'd a bit.  Jovanna's parents are driving here for Thanksgiving.  Going to be one HELL of a drive...I feel bad for them but there's no way we're driving anywhere with an almost 2 year old so it's pretty much that or nothing.  We've all been fairly cautious so it should be fine.  Seems like an insane idea but they really want to see their grandbaby so I can kind of understand.

Our family thanksgiving is probably going to just be us in the house and then maybe my parents and sisters will visit for a bit.  Definitely not meeting up with the entire clan.  That is a bad idea.  They're going to do some kind of outside dinner thing and space out so I guess that might work okay?  I don't know.  I can't really deal with this shit anymore to be honest.  Pump me full of whatever they gave Trump and let's just get this shit over with. :bawling:

Welp, update on our family situation---

My mother in law is pretty sure that dumbass cousin passed the 'rona over to his mom, so she's been keeping tabs on her and treating the situation as if she has covid as far as full PPE and stuff (MIL is a nurse) and it's gotten to a point where if tomorrow is the same or worse she thinks it's time to take her to a hospital. Aunt and cousin have been isolating from the grandparents (they live on the same property in houses that touch but don't connect, if that makes any sense. A second house was built on the property years ago as a home for Great Grandma and Aunt and Cousin reside there, while Grandparents live in main house) and cousin has been told that if he goes out again that Thanksgiving is cancelled for everyone (???????? pretty sure it was anyway but that's the threat they're going with) and it's all just a big mess and if this post doesn't make sense it's because I'm very very very very very anxious right now holy shit

tl;dr: dumbass cousin likely passed covid to his mom who seems to be on a path to hospitalization

Mother in law is starting to recover. We had a bit of a scare when about a week in she informed my wife that she hadn't eaten since getting sick :rip:  but is doing better now. Still has a nasty cough, but no fever and other symptoms she had are gone.

Thought I had it for a bit. Started feeling off about a week after last contact with her but thought it was allergies at first, but woke up last Sunday having trouble breathing and had a number of other symptoms. Notified work and got tested Monday and was home until Thursday when the test came back negative. Guessing it was some kind of respiratory infection, or a nasty bout of the flu since that's been starting to rear its head again. Kicked my ass pretty good for a few days there. Getting tested was incredibly unpleasant as well. X_x

Yeah, things are just gonna get scarier and nastier from here on out with weather changes and cold/flu season starting. Please keep on top of your health, Aunt has had 2 negative tests so far apparently but my Mother in law is all but certain she has it at this point. (Not to say I think you have it, but take care of yourself)

The tests aren't 100% accurate after all. My mind sometimes wanders and I think, what if I do/did actually have it..? But I think the odds of all four of us getting false negative results are quite slim, so I will try not to let my imagination run wild and just assume that the tests were right. It was just some other kind of cold virus. (I think :uhoh: )
