  1. Oh damn, I didn't realize PPPPPP ended!  I went and caught up on the last two chapters immediately.  Definitely a bummer.  I wonder what happened there.  It felt like it was ramping up and hit a peak with the 4-on-4 battle, then it just kind of meandered for a few chapters before ending.  I don't think it's unlikely it was a somewhat planned ending since his mom died during all that, but it feels like some of those last few chapters were wasted, and we probably could have just done the Dada backstory and then this chapter.

    Spoiler

Not sure what to make of the ending, with the body choosing the genius side of Lucky, but I loved that it ended with him hitting Gakuon.  Too often, I feel like anime/manga does the thing where people are expected to forgive parents or try to make it work, and I love that this manga said fuck that.

  2. Some really great stuff this week(with a couple manga that I had to catch up from last week, too).  Akane-banashi really paying off the brief lull.  Elusive Samurai with a signature moment and a gorgeous 2-page panel.  Undead Unluck has been really fun with the most recent arc.  Ichinose Family really digging into the meat.  Even Fabricant 100 had a good pair of chapters these last two weeks after being kind of ok after the first chapter.  Just gotta catch up on the last two Sakamoto chapters.

I've also been reading Jiangshi X.  It's fine.  Kinda basic demon Shonen stuff, but this last chapter had some cool art.  Not sure I'm gonna cling to this one.

I wonder how Cipher Academy has been doing lol.

  3. Chapter #75

    Spoiler

Holy shit, that ending was intense.  We're really digging into some deep meat here, and clearly not everything is right with Damian's mom.  Now I'm intensely curious about the backstory there.  Clearly the switch came when Damian's dad was mentioned, so was it a forced pregnancy?

Beyond that, a lot of great panels this week, especially with Anya and Damian.  It's also nice to see their relationship properly developing into an admitted friendship.

Overall, this was a pretty good arc.  It was a great way to get Anya a Stella, and did a lot to show both her and Damian's growth.  And some of those bus scenes were just hilarious.

  4. Nah, I agree on PPPPPP.  Before, even when I didn't know exactly what was going on, there was a charm that made it still interesting.  But between having no Lucky and this kind of meandering focus on the other septuplets, it's just not grabbing me the same.  And normally after 3 or so chapters, I understand what's happening and it rings me back in, but not for like 6 now.

  5. Holy shit, this was it

    Ichinose Family's Deadly Sins #10

    Spoiler

This was the chapter that I think fully hooked me back in.  Last couple chapters were feeling a little stale and felt like the escalation was scaled back.  But here they drop the big twist hook.  I like that it's clearly gonna have a loop-like structure, but it's not about time travel(at least blatantly).  I'm already salivating for the next chapter.

  6. I saw a video recently where someone absolutely loved Dirge of Cerberus, and it made me want to give it another shot.  Wish I still had my copy from years back.

I'm sad to hear about Zack's voice actor.  I've been watching these FF retrospective videos and someone was talking about how the new Zack voice actor in the VII Remake wasn't as strong, and hearing he did the same thing here...god, I hope they pull it together for Rebirth.

    1.:ps2: Shadow Hearts

    2. :snes: Earthbound
    3. :switch: Paper Mario: The Origami King

Kinda sad this ended up being my full list for the year, but college kicked my ass

    1. :switch: Pokemon Violet

    2. :snes: Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I still technically need to make trades t complete my Pokedex, but I finished all of the story and the post-game stuff for Pokemon Violet.  I honestly don't have the patience or the motivation to do EV training, so I probably won't participate in the raids.  That said, I had a blast with this game.  I kept finding every chance to play, even if it was just for 10 minutes.  The game kind of had hills and valleys, where I was enamored for like the first 10-20 hours, then I saw through the matrix after getting all Miraidon upgrades, then I fell in love with exploring again.

Overall, I think this game has the same problem Final Fantasy XV does: the open world is a great concept with less cool stuff filling it out.  For XV, it was the lack of actual towns.  Here, I wish there were more sidequests and random locations that gave more incentive for exploring.  I was also annoyed that the Team Star boss monsters were essentially the same after being so impressed with the first one.  I think you should be able to ride Pokemon other than the legendary.  I also wish the wild Pokemon actually like...did stuff.  That said, it was still so joyous to be flying around and seeing some Pokemon I had never seen in the distance and rushing to go grab it.  Or getting excited whenever I come across one of my classic faves and feeling the deep need to catch it.  A lot to improve upon, but I think they have a winning formula here.

As for A Link to the Past, this was actually my first time completing it.  Or really playing it at all when it comes down to it.  I played it in retrospect during the PS1 era, and I never stick with it past the first dungeon.  But even all these years later, it holds up and was impressive.  Love the aesthetic of everything, and it's truly a graphical accomplishment on many fronts.  The dungeons were really creative with some tough(at times frustrating) bosses, though a decent deal of them were manageable with some fairies in bottles.  I also love how natural it felt discovering things and solving problems on the overworld, with the fortune teller hints helping fill the gaps when I was otherwise a bit lost.  I definitely see why people love this game, and it's definitely one of my favorite Zelda experiences.

  8. Yeah, that was one thing that was nice about binging for the catch-up.  Things made more sense because you could piece it all together over 3-5 chapters lol

Really liked the fight with Kanaguri in Sakamoto Days.  Class stuff.

Ichinose's is still intriguing, but man, it does so much setup sometimes that I feel I'm left waiting for something to happen after certain chapters.  Like it feels like NOTHING happened this week.

    Akane-banashi 45

    Spoiler

I like how they've framed Akane's growth so far.  The last story was about understanding it deeper.  Now Akane knows how to understand a story better and performs it well, but it's not a fit for her, so she has to find a way to make it her own.  In the process, she'll get some life experience.  Poor Jumbo.

I liked the last two chapters of Elusive Samurai

    Spoiler

It was fun seeing the war of words/philosophies between Tokiyuki and Tadayoshi.  The last chapter really did a good way of helping us feel the weight and intimidation behind Tadayoshi's words.  It seems Tokiyuki won the battle for momentum, but I wonder how this battle will play out?

  9. Finally got all caught up on Sakamoto Days.  Hot damn, have I been missing out.

    Spoiler

The fights going on pretty much since the race for the database have all been stellar.  As usual, Yuto Suzuki has such a cool art style with some jaw-dropping panels.  I also love the way everyone is characterized through their fighting.  I did have to go back and remind myself about who Yotsumura was because I forgot he had already shown up, but it was worth reading that fight on the tow truck again.

Stoked to see how Sakamoto/Kanaguri ends.  Kanaguri felt like a (fun) flash in the pan last time, but his return has been great.

  10. At first I was thinking there's so much more to cover that 24 episodes would be good, but then I realized they've already covered up to Chapter 39 - which is about halfway through.

If they don't so the movie option, I imagine they probably just have an extended season up to like 16 episodes.

I haven't caught up to the end of this season, but overall, really happy with this adaptation.  There's certain artistic nuances they can't capture like the way Fujinami did page layouts, but the animation did massive justice to the action sequences(including adding new scenes to some of the fights).

Also, holy shit, Mob Psycho ended on such a great note.  Legit one of the best all-time anime in my opinion.  It has the heart and seriousness that One Punch Man is missing.

    Spoiler

How fitting that the final battle was against himself.  It really wraps the narrative of the show up neatly the way he had been learning to express himself and be at peace with all parts of himself.  And I loved that they didn't just have Tsubomi say yes, but they're actually developing their relationship.

Gonna have to read the manga soon

  11. Merry Christmas/Happy Holidays, everyone!

Had some light Christmas festivities this year as I was finishing up my last semester of school.  Went to the Chicago Zoolights on Monday, and then browsed around the Chriskindl Market on Wednesday.  Today I had Christmas breakfast with the polycule and we just got done watching Castle in the Sky.

Gifts won't be opened until like a week for now for scheduling reasons, so I don't know what I've got yet lol.

  12. Still gotta catch up on that one.  Sakamoto will come next, and then I'll finally trudge through it.  Where I left off, it was one of the least interesting ones for me.  But I'm definitely excited to see where it's gone since.

  13. Dragon Ball Super is back!

    Spoiler

I know this is just a prequel arc for the movie, but I LOVE that they're finally focusing on a grown up Trunks and Goten while Goku and Vegeta are fucking off elsewhere.  I'm hoping they either milk this time between now and the movie, or they keep expanding on this concept past the movie's arc so we can get the rest of the crew facing some serious, epic battles before Goku and Vegeta come back to fight Freeza.  Or hell, have the fight with Freeza be completely separate.

But yeah, I like the vibes so far.  Good stuff.

  14. I'm actually surprised some of those made it up there, but I'm guessing the algorithm factors in binges, and those are definitely the series I've done the largest catch-up binges on lately.
