  1. I'm more often worried that an old lady will get mad at me if I don't give enough space, but I guess it depends on each person. Some olds folks are hyper-aware of how they are more at risk and are superduper cautious, while others seem to be completely unconcerned about it. For a while our grocery store was doing special seniors shopping hours from 7am-8am everyday and you could only go in the store if you were a million years old, so I hope all the "at risk and really worried about it" old folks shop during that time.
  2. Over 9000 cases reported today in Ontario. We’re blowing precious record highs out of the water right now… Fun times.
  3. “I’m a teacher, I have fourteen students. If I’m willing to risk it, why aren’t you?” Like c'mon people, this wedding is really important!!!
  4. Stumbled on to this article via twitter: Texas Wedding Photographers Have Seen Some $#!+
  5. I'm getting pretty paranoid about COVID-19 again these days. I guess it's a combination of my daughter going back to school next week, going out to more places over the last few weeks, and the rising case numbers in the news Every little thing - an ache, a random sneeze, whatever - now tends to send my imagination running wild thinking about how I've got the virus and my impending doom Thankfully my wife is pretty good at talking me back down to Earth
  6. Yeah, our little one started it all on Friday night with a very runny nose, then it was my wife, then me, and then our older daughter started coughing yesterday. Coincidentally, last week was our toddler's first week at childcare. Colds go around a lot at childcare centres. It's also been cooler weather lately. Lots of people get colds this time of year. But it seemed a bit irresponsible to just assume that it's only a cold. On the off chance that it is COVID, I don't want to be responsible for spreading it around
  7. That's no fun. No symptoms so far though? I thought Spring was finally here for good, but we woke up to snow this morning. Not much accumulation, maybe two inches, but big fluffy snowflakes are still coming down. It's a nice scene to see out the window.
  8. Kiddo and I went out to the local Party City store to shop for a new Halloween costume (which she apparently had to have ). There were a lot of people in the store, I couldn't get out of there fast enough But we've got the costume secured, so trick or treating is a go for tomorrow night even if it's snowing!
  9. If she can go home today then I'm assuming her recovery is going fairly well so far..? Take good care of her while she's on the mend!
  10. Got our results this morning - all of the tests were negative. Huzzah. We are once again allowed to leave our apartment
  11. It's tough. They can only do so much. The government is pumping more money into education, but the isn't a limitless supply of cash. And so many schools are old and at capacity as it is. Can't make the schools bigger and more spacious overnight. My daughter is in grade 5 this year and follows instruction well, so I'm not worried about her ability to follow all the safety rules. But I am hoping that lots of other families at our school have chosen to opt out. The fewer kids in my daughter's class, the better!
  12. My company's global HQ is in Georgia (Rome) so I guess upper management is going to be happy... until half the workforce calls in sick
  13. So Halloween is in two days What (if anything) are you guys doing for PANDEMIC Halloween? Home owners: Are you going to give out candy like usual-ish? Or just turn out all the lights, close all the blinds, lock the doors and pretend like you're not home? Child owners: Are you going to take yer kiddos out trick-or-treating? Party goers: Maybe skip out on the Halloween party this year..? It's going to be a bit chilly Saturday night. The forecasted high for Saturday where I live is 5 C, so in the evening it will be a bit cooler yet. At least it's not supposed to rain. But given the cooler temp, I'll probably leave the toddler at home with my wife and take our 9 year-old out to get some candy. I'm curious to see how many homes in our neighbourhood will bother giving out candy. We'll take whatever we can get.
  14. I honestly can't tell if Ma was being serious or sarcastic. If it's the former, then I want to see some specific examples of how people out east have poorer manners than westerners (Obviously it's all just silliness, like Slix said, there are all kinds of different people everywhere... you can't really generalize about whole regions / groups of people like that... or maybe you can )
  15. That's a bummer. I would probably not be so quick to pull my kids from school, but it would also depend on other factors. Does your school seem like it's got a good plan in place to screen kids each day and notify parents if a case is found in the school? There are still going to be some cases that slip through the cracks, but if the school seems to have a credible plan in place to handle COVID and mitigate the risks, then that would satisfy me. I totally get how other people would see things differently though! Each kid is different too. My 10 year old always wears a mask without complaints or having to remind her, and she's mindful about physical distancing and other COVID-related rules, so it's easy for us to trust her to be safe at school. If she behaved differently then we'd probably be more worried about that as well. School doesn't start here until after Labour Day. We'll see how things go in September.
  16. Been a while since I bumped this thread… The situation with COVID is much improved… Now the problem is the people protesting against vaccine mandates and other things Anti-mandate protest outside B.C. high school leads to confrontation, protester hurling insults at student
  17. Sounds like we'll be seeing a snap election call very soon. Going to the polls in September could be a total shitshow depending on how things go with the virus over the next few weeks. Lots of people are gonna be mad
  18. I feel for the small businesses that are getting hit hard, and I hope we can find a way to let small restaurants, cafes, shops, etc. stay open in some fashion. It's more the bars, strip clubs, and casinos that I'm surprised are allowed to continue operating. Just doesn't seem smart.
  19. Not sure what the situation is like where you're at, but here in Ontario the problem IMO is that the definition of an "essential workplace" is far too broad (as it is right now). The closure of non-essential business has not had a great enough effect. A more serious lockdown would require more people to actually stay home, which would also lower demand on daycare, allowing for at least some daycares - perhaps the majority of them - to also shutter for the duration of the lockdown. It would be a pretty dreadful few weeks but I think it would be more effective than what we're doing now.
  20. They’ve done that with Doug Ford the last couple campaigns, but I didn’t realize they would do that with Kenney too. I’m not sure how much Doug Ford would help or hurt anyway. Ontario voters tend to like different parties in the provincial and federal governments. Maybe we think that balances things out somehow Ford’s PC’s are in control at Queen’s Park, so people are likely to lean Liberal in this election (based on historical data). Just let Dougie loose and see what happens
  21. False alarm, we are an essential business and I'm not getting laid off (yet)
