  1. It's gonna get worse before it gets better. Time to hunker down and stop going out for a while except for groceries and booze. I toyed with the idea of a "Dry January" this year, but to hell with that
  2. Headline today: Ontario reports record-high 2,923 new COVID-19 cases as ICU admissions reach pandemic high Great, we're going for 3000 cases a day The government keeps telling people to stay home, etc., etc., and a lockdown came into effect on Dec. 26th (which seems rather late given the way things were trending) but I don't think these measures will actually solve much. The best part is that apparently Ontario's Finance Minister has been away on holiday in St. Barts since the legislature took their break mid-December. Whoops! That ain't a good look for him or the government. Finance Minister is usually on of the top dogs in government. Dude might have just committed career suicide. When you've got the Premier, Health Minister, etc. reminding people everyday to only travel for essential purposes and then a key member of the government takes off on a Caribbean vacation, people are gonna get mad.
  3. Christmas is over and I'm back on the super-worried about / couldn't-care-less about COVID-19 rollercoaster ride. Leaning more towards worried right now since we started a lockdown on Boxing Day and case counts remain high, so it will be a few weeks at least before I go through the next bout of pandemic fatigue. We were careful through the holidays and didn't see anybody, which was actually pretty damn nice and relaxing; I might do Christmas like this again next year. But I'm sure quite a few people out there thought, "You can't keep us from our family Christmas traditions" and still did stuff anyways. It's could be a fun () 1-2 weeks watching the cases continue to climb We also got the new COVID variant goin' on here in Ontario. Is it really that hard to just do the quarantine thing after you return to the country? Two weeks isn't that long, is it..?
  4. If she can go home today then I'm assuming her recovery is going fairly well so far..? Take good care of her while she's on the mend!
  5. “I’m a teacher, I have fourteen students. If I’m willing to risk it, why aren’t you?” Like c'mon people, this wedding is really important!!!
  6. Stumbled on to this article via twitter: Texas Wedding Photographers Have Seen Some $#!+
  7. That's a bummer, get well soon you guys. Sounds like it's become a pretty rough situation out there in Alberta (not that were fairing any better in Ontario).
  8. Ontario is still very COVID-y. I think we're doing worse than ever up here in terms of case counts, though perhaps not as many people are dying because the situation at old folks' homes isn't quite as dire as it was in the spring. But still there appears to be way more infections and community spread than when the whole province shutdown in March... and we're kinda just carrying more or less like business as usual. A few schools in our school board have declared outbreaks recently. So far I don't think there have been any confirmed cases at my daughter's elementary school. Here's hoping it stays that way.
  9. I'm more often worried that an old lady will get mad at me if I don't give enough space, but I guess it depends on each person. Some olds folks are hyper-aware of how they are more at risk and are superduper cautious, while others seem to be completely unconcerned about it. For a while our grocery store was doing special seniors shopping hours from 7am-8am everyday and you could only go in the store if you were a million years old, so I hope all the "at risk and really worried about it" old folks shop during that time.
  10. I will admit that I have once or twice been tempted to ask somebody, "These arrows are confusing eh?" but so far I have kept quiet. I do find it a bit astonishing how so many people seem to still be oblivious to them
  11. Does your store also do the one-way traffic thing in the aisles to control the flow of how the customers move? There are arrows up and down all of the floors of every supermarket here, have been for months, and still most people don't notice them. Doesn't really bother me much, but I have seen a couple people get "arrow-rage" and chew somebody out for walking the wrong way down an aisle
  12. Everything sucks right now But it especially sucks for the people working retail. It's good that they'll be limiting occupancy limits in your state, Slix, but I guess the trade-off there is that many people really don't like having to wait in lines to get in stores, so you'll probably have to deal with more cranky customers than usual I'm lucky that I can work from home when needed. Can't drive to the office anyways while I'm without a vehicle. If I'm lucky we might get that shit sorted out with the insurance company this week...
  13. This is more or less the approach that the province of Ontario seems to be taking right now. They are of course worried about the negative impacts on small- and medium-sized businesses if they do a hard lockdown, but, like... how are they small business owners gonna run their businesses if they die from COVID? I guess it's a lose-lose situation for governments no matter what they do, but I'd learn toward stricter lockdown measures. Things are starting to go downhill here and by December I think it could be really bad
  14. We were informed yesterday that a toddler from my daughter's childcare centre recently tested positive for COVID-19 Apparently all toddlers and staff that were present at the centre last Friday are considered at risk, so we have to keep her at home for 14 days and self-monitor for symptoms (fortunately there are none). Also we got into a pretty bad car accident on Sunday morning (fortunately we were all uninjured). I'm not having a good week!
  15. I didn't hear of much vandalism or other dumb shit around here this Halloween. Hardly anybody was out to begin with.
  16. I'm not normally sentimental about stuff like this, but man this was a pretty lame Halloween Hardly any kids out there, probably 2/3 houses in our neighborhood weren't giving out candy. We still ended up doing pretty well, and all the people we did meet were really nice... but it was nothing like trick-or-treating used to be
  17. Kiddo and I went out to the local Party City store to shop for a new Halloween costume (which she apparently had to have ). There were a lot of people in the store, I couldn't get out of there fast enough But we've got the costume secured, so trick or treating is a go for tomorrow night even if it's snowing!
  18. So Halloween is in two days What (if anything) are you guys doing for PANDEMIC Halloween? Home owners: Are you going to give out candy like usual-ish? Or just turn out all the lights, close all the blinds, lock the doors and pretend like you're not home? Child owners: Are you going to take yer kiddos out trick-or-treating? Party goers: Maybe skip out on the Halloween party this year..? It's going to be a bit chilly Saturday night. The forecasted high for Saturday where I live is 5 C, so in the evening it will be a bit cooler yet. At least it's not supposed to rain. But given the cooler temp, I'll probably leave the toddler at home with my wife and take our 9 year-old out to get some candy. I'm curious to see how many homes in our neighbourhood will bother giving out candy. We'll take whatever we can get.
  19. The tests aren't 100% accurate after all. My mind sometimes wanders and I think, what if I do/did actually have it..? But I think the odds of all four of us getting false negative results are quite slim, so I will try not to let my imagination run wild and just assume that the tests were right. It was just some other kind of cold virus. (I think )
  20. We all have our moments when we lose our minds over things, I guess. Except for the people that just nuts 24/7. That must be fun.
  21. That sounds kinda frustrating. My situation is a bit of the opposite; even though we're being very careful, really limiting non-essential stuff and pretty much not getting together with anybody, many of my relatives (mum especially) are like hyper-serious about this stuff and will sometimes imply that I am not doing enough to stay safe. I got lectured because I do not disinfect my door knobs and keys every single time I leave and re-enter our apartment I wear a mask, wash my hands religously, keep my hands away from my face unless I'm sure they're clean, keep physical distance from people, don't really get together with anybody anyways, etc. I feel like that is satisfactory.
  22. Yeah, I was pretty surprised. Less than 48 hours. I was expecting it to take 5 or 6 days.
  23. Got our results this morning - all of the tests were negative. Huzzah. We are once again allowed to leave our apartment
  24. How much time between that gathering and when Lee went to get tested? I think if you go too soon after a potential exposure, there's a chance of a false negative..?
