What out-of-season anime have you watched recently?

Recommended Posts

So the bestie that I helped with on Zoom wedding passed on some anime they didn't want anymore and after taking what I wanted out of it I'm sending out any that my friend circles want before hitting the donation bin. What I took out for me was:
Rune Soldier
Bubblum Crisis Tokyo 2040
Fractal
GunxSword

I'll work on those slowly once I get through some other stuff I'm streaming

I'm excited for reactions to Bubblegum Crisis 2040.  It's not nearly as good as the original OVAs, but I have a lot of nostalgia with that series.  It also has one of the most hype anime OPs of all time.

I restarted my Funi subscription so I decided to check out Akudama Drive. I missed out on it during the fall season. Zipped through 5 episodes because I couldn't sleep last night. I'm enjoying it so far!

I mentioned this in discord spoilers but there's been 3 Soul eater easter eggs referenced
* Death Scythe in the gentlemans club on the other side of the booth that White clad guy was sitting in.
*Toy excaliber head when Shinra and the others are casually shopping (I missed that one)
*Maka and the moon from Soul eater

I'm calling it now that it's same universe

Finished the first Higurashi series and started the first few episodes of Kai.

Spoiler

I had forgotten that Keiichi got his memory of previous timelines back before Kai, which made it feel a bit like a big reveal again.  I love the conclusion with Keiichi/Rena, and how it had been built from the very beginning of the season.  So many feels here, and they hit harder having the context of what's to come.  It's also fun just watching each character slowly learn how to be a better person to create a bright future whether they remember or not.  It's like ingrained in them and it's heartwarming as fuck.

The one thing that never gets covered in this series, though...what the fuck is going on in Oishi's life that he's such a dick in the Satoko's Uncle timeline?!  It's driving me mad!

I may watch Rei finally, but I pretty much plan to finish Kai and then move right onto Gou.

I finished Akudama Drive last night. I enjoyed it quite a bit. Guess I'll spoiler my thoughts on it just in case:

I was kinda bummed about how it ended for Swindler, but I guess there was no going back for her. At least they saved the kids.

Swindler :salute:

The Akudama gang were a pretty fun bunch of characters, with the exception of Cutthroat (very one-dimensional and kinda dumb) and maybe Doctor... haven't really made up my mind on her yet.

I liked the exploration of the idea that very small, seemingly innocent decisions / actions can set off a whole chain of unexpected events. Like obviously it's a bit extreme, but it's interesting to think about what ifs like that.

Forgot to mention: I also really liked Hoodlum and Brawler's part of the story. It was pretty predictable how things were going to go with Hoodlum at the end there, but it was satisfying all the same.

Overall it was a great series. I think this one I'm going to see if I can read the manga (if there's one for it but I'm sure) because I feel like while the story was handled well and covered all the basics of explaining what we needed to know, that the manga might go more in depth on the Akudama backgrounds like Courier, Doctor, and Cutthroat. I mean if not that's fine but I feel like there was some info or storyline that they opted out to keep focus on what we needed to focus on.

Oh almost forgot @Psycho666Soldier I started AD Police first, and almost done with Bubblegum Crisis (older)

Akudama Drive was an anime original, not inspired by a manga or other source material, so the anime is all you get (unless it was popular enough for the creators to make a spin-off of some sort)

Okay I wondered. Alright then.

@Psycho666Soldier I started with AD Police since it's the prequel and it was only 3 episodes. They're mostly side stories that are only tied to Bubblegum in location and scenarios like Boomers being the issue in early 2000's where BC is set in 2032.

So I finished BubbleGum Crisis 2040. And I'm not sure how to feel about it overall. It feels like it's a stand alone series from the older BGC.

Spoiler

You have all the same names from the older series even though it's set 10ish years later from the older one. Just a couple new characters in this and obvious change of design of the characters.
Lima/Lina joins the Knights vs already being a member.
Silia is much more angry and seems hateful of Voomers. Not a fan of it.
The ending kinda goes into this weird evanaglion artistic style ending that I got confused what was even happening here.

I started watching Ascendance of a Bookworm recently and... contrary to my expections, am really enjoying it. I don't typically like isekai, at all*, but this has been downright delightful so far.

See, I really want to like the Spider Isekai but the pacing of the series it kinda dragging me. I know I'll go back to it eventually and finish but a lot of the level building eps are just a lot to process in my head when watching. :twitch2:

And isekai has blown up so much I have gotten more selective on what ones I watch now so I totally get ya.

I think I'll be itching to rewatch Claymore soonish. :lurk:

Yeah, I don't really have an interest in watching any other Isekai other than Slime Datta Ken.

I've been watching through The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya for the first time recently.  It is a trip to say the least.  Watching in the original order, and just finished the Endless 8.  I can't imagine enjoying that arc if you had to wait for it week to week

I think one of the main draw for me has been the fairly self aware way it pokes fun at the genre now and then, really. Though with that said I've been more amused by all of the main character's monologues than I expected to be, lol. I can definitely see why it might drag on a bit too much for a lot of folks though.

I think it's worth a look! It wasn't a huge hit, but I really liked it. I think the common complaint from people was "nothing happens in this show" or something along those lines. It was a bit slower and atmospheric IIRC. Even when not much was happening, it was a beautiful thing to look at. I really liked the style.

Slower and atmospheric is always a good combination in my book. I'll be taking a look! o/

Finished Haruhi.  Pretty fun ride, but man, the arc where they show the filming of the movie just kinda proves Haruhi is kind of a piece of shit.  Literally the only reason people put up with her abuse is because she's an unpredictable god and Kyon is hopelessly in love with her for some reason he can't quite figure out.  Koizumi is the ultimate fuckboy and is one of the most depressed assholes I've ever seen.

Yuki and Mikuru can do no wrong, though.

Been out of the anime loop for a LONG time (pretty much since FMA: Brotherhood finished up) and have only watched a handful of stuff since then, mostly game adaptation stuff (Daganronpa, Persona 4). Watched Demon Slayer recently at a work friends insistence and enjoyed it quite a bit even though I wasn't really into some of the characters and didn't care much for the art style and some of the character designs (I find that I've become kind of snobbish in my old age. XD ) .

Just the past couple days I've been watching one that really reminded me of why I used to like anime so much though. Saw a random picture of a character from Dorohedoro on twitter and looked it up and found there was an anime for it on Netflix and figure what the hell, there's only 13 eps. Was hooked with the first episode and watched the whole thing over the past few days. So weird and pretty consistently funny. Interesting character designs as well and I liked the art style. Thought it was going to lean super heavy into the gore at first, but I never felt like it went overboard. Hoping to see a season 2 eventually.

Yeahhh, as much as I enjoy the show I gotta say, Haruhi as a character is pretty damn well beyond deplorable in my eyes. 😅

Did you watch the movie, as well? If not, I highly recommend it.

I actually didn't realize there was a movie, though I know there are little spin-offs.  I'll see where I can find it!

Just finished off watching canon Bleach (still gonna watch the filler), including the Fullbringer Arc for the first time. Original Soul Society arc still hype, the Arrancar arc is sometimes hype and sometimes not (and it feels a little scattershot near the end).

- Still hated the idea that FUFUFUFU Aizen is responsible for every single thing ever

- Still feels like the Arrancar arc was wrapped up quicker than it was meant to be but then Kubo kept going. You just had characters disappear and fights not get depicted (Yammy)

- The Fullbringer Arc got hype near the end but it also wrapped up a bit quick considering how long it took to go anywhere, I somewhat wonder if that was because the anime was cancelled and they just adapted things instead of stretching it out. I liked the Ginjou plot twist quite a bit.

- Though two plot problems I had: They just came off Aizen and his hypnotism powers and it was never suggested by anyone "Hey, could we be dealing with Aizen-like powers again?" Also Ginjou's grand revelation that the Shinigami Substitute Badge was being used to suppress Ichigo's powers was like "No fucking duh, they already showed that Captain and Vice-Captain classes have to seal their own powers and get permission to use them, why would they let Ichigo with his captain-class powers run amok?"

- The last wrap-up for what at the time they figured was the end of the series was done really well ;_;

I started Blood Lad for kicks n giggles and Lupin III Part 5. I'm glad they've been able to keep the classic look of the animation style in a fresh way over the years. I do need to watch the rest of Lupin previous series.

Started watching FLCL again tonight. It still holds up. For me, this is basically the pinnacle of anime. I can’t remember how many times I’ve watched it now, but it’s been a few years since my last rewatch. I also haven’t listened to the pillows much in a while either. Everything about it is just killing me right now :rip: It don’t get better than this.

I am still hesitant to watch FLCL Progressive or Alternative, but perhaps I will take the plunge into those after I finish the O.G. FLCL :thinking2: :uhoh:

I actually just watched FLCL on Wednesday and Thursday.  My first time seeing the last two episodes, too(I've seen the first four countless times on TV).  The animation and just general stylization is insane.  And I appreciated the soundtrack so much more now than I did back then.

I also love that the whole show is basically a metaphor for puberty and sexual repression.

Yeah the FLCL soundtrack is just one hit after another. I love the pillows. Fantastic use of music throughout all 6 episodes. Like I said in a previous post, it still holds up after all these years. Every time I rewatch it, it feels like the first time all over again. So good. An all-time favourite for me.

I finished FLCL Progressive tonight. I went in with rather low expectations — didn’t want to get my heart broken — but in the end I enjoyed it quite a bit.

The first two or three episodes were just okay. I was not totally in love with it like the original FLCL, but it was okay. I think the fourth episode was where it really hit it’s stride for me. From there on out it was pretty darn great. Overall it was good. Not life-changing-good like the original, but very solid. It was not a bad sequel that tarnished the original for me. (Phew!)

the pillows are still fantastic. Some the new tracks were great, and I love that they busted out some of the classics too like “Last Dinosaur” and “I Think I Can”

It kills me how good this song is :rip:

Just watched the Boruto Movie. I kept putting it off because the first scene of the anime involving Kawaki was so well animated that I thought Kawaki stuff was part of the movie but it turns out it had nothing to do with it and I'd passed the part of the anime that told this story a long time ago :lurk:

I think it was okay overall. The anime's additions really fleshed things out a lot more so you actually grew to like Boruto a bit and being disappointed in his actions instead of spending 2/3rds of the movie disliking him. Or Naruto being a neglectful father was driven home a lot more. Or with  Sarada's relationship with Sasuke is heavily dealt with instead of just "Oh it's just my silly dad who's technically an exile and I don't even know who he is." Or the continuation of the Ohtsutsuki storyline with more interesting tidbits to it than the movie (and a bridge into the Kawaki stuff, which I think even as a rehash is getting pretty good). The last battle scene was still mostly spectacular though (there's a view "fight with Pain" style animation hiccups).

After riding the nostalgia high of listening to pillows songs over and over again last week after I finished FLCL Progressive, I went ahead and re-watched the original FLCL again (for the second time this month :rotfl:) Doesn't matter than I had just re-watched it like a week before, I loved every second of it. After that, I moved on to FLCL Alternative. I think I liked Progressive a bit better overall, but Alternative was alright. Neither are on the same level as the original, but both sequels had elements I enjoyed. Progressive had a stronger finish than Alternative IMO.

Before I move on to something else from my old to-watch list, I gotta watch the Hathaway movie, and maybe that new anime movie on Netflix (soda pop something or other?)

I watched the first four episodes of Those Snow White Notes last night. I like it quite a bit. I thought of checking it out during the spring season, but I was already watching several other shows. Now I can just binge watch it :music: The shamisen music is fantastic. The story itself is not incredible, and the pacing is faster than I expected (especially the first episode—lots going on!) Also the mom character is just ridiculous. But whatever. The music is very cool.

I finished off Those Snow White Notes last night. More awesome music throughout the final episodes, but I wasn't very satisfied by the ending. Too many things left unresolved. It feels like there should be one more episode to tie up some loose ends... give us an OVA or something. The source material is a long running manga, so they of course cannot wrap up everything in just one season of anime, but surely they could have ended this better :sigh: Unless there's going to be a second season eventually, though I doubt that.
